Dear parents and carers,
I am writing to tell you about a computer (cyber) problem that affected some student information in Victorian government schools.
What happened
A Department of Education computer system was accessed by someone outside the department.
What information was seen
The following student information may have been accessed:
- Student name
- School email address and password (the password was encrypted)
- School name
- Year level
What information was NOT seen
No one accessed:
- Birth dates
- Home addresses
- Phone numbers
Your child’s safety
Your child’s safety is very important to us.
If you are worried about your child’s safety or that your child’s school location is known, please contact me (0478 740 455)
You can also contact Victoria Police or The Orange Door if needed.
For secondary school students
Student email accounts are protected.
Please remind your child not to reply to emails from people they do not know.
What is happening with the data
There is no evidence that the information has been shared or made public.
What we are doing now
All student passwords have been reset.
Students cannot access their school accounts at the moment.
Students will receive new passwords at the start of the school year.
The Department of Education has fixed the problem and added more security.
They will continue to give us updates in 2026.
